Time with the Littles

Dear Atticus and Sonora,
While Papa was off backpacking and bonding with the bigs, I had my own bonding time with the littles.  I treasured the time I got to spend with the two of you.  We went to the park:

We babysat four other kids and had worms in dirt for dessert:

We released butterflies into the wild that had transformed before our eyes:

I took random pictures of this crazy town we live in:

The two of you are so cute and most of the time you really truly enjoy being together.  Sonora calls Atticus, Buds and he calls her, Norie.  Cuteness.

I sure love my littles.

Hunting for Beetles

May 7, 2013

Dear Sonora and Atticus,
While Jonas and Clara had soccer practice the two of you decided to go hunting for beetles.

You found a huge one and played with it for almost an hour, watching and observing it move up and down your stick.

Sonora was'nt sure about it at first, but she soon warmed up to the idea and had fun with it too.

I love watching you in nature and your interaction with each other.
Love, Mama

P.S. Check out those clouds, a storm was brewing and the sky smelled like rain...mmm!

Dr. Seuss Day

Dear Children,
Today was Dr. Seuss Day at school.  Last night we decided you were going to be Thing 1, Thing 2 and Cindy Lou Who.  After you were in bed I ran to the store to buy blue hair spray and then I made the signs for your shirts.

Jonas and Clara were super excited to go to school with blue hair, but Sonora wasn't quite sure of her hair-do and started to cry when it was time to go to class because she was embarrassed.

Thankfully her teacher came out in the hall and told her how cute she looked and that they had been waiting for Cindy Lou Who to come to school.

Happy Dr. Seuss Day!
Love, Mama

P.S.  When did Dr. Seuss get his own day?  We never had it when I was a kid.  It's weird.

Sonora & Mama

January 22, 2013

Dear Sonora,
We went to the Children's Museum today, just the two of us because you had earned enough "Nora dollars" to have a parent date.   We  stayed for two hours and it was so much fun!  You ran around to each station, exploring them with an almost constant giggle.  Your favorites were the face painting and the boat races.

You loved looking in the mirror and being able to paint your own face.

Then you asked if you could paint my face and I said, "Sure!".  You decided on a rainbow and here's the start of it with the two clouds on my cheeks.

I love you and I'm so happy we had the chance to go on a Mama date!

Turquoise Trail Singing Club

December 7, 2012

Dear Sonora,
You're in a singing club at school.  It's optional and you decided all on your own that you wanted to do it.  Every Wednesday instead of having recess, you go to the music room to be instructed by the music teacher, Mr. Char.

You had your first concert of the school year today at the mall and you were sooo nervous!  You did really well though and you looked so cute up on the stage.

Clara told you that you looked like a "rock star".

You got lots of compliments and you were beaming all day.

Your favorite part of the day was when "the real Santa" gave you a hug.  I had no idea Santa was so tall!

Keep shining my love,
Mama

Meeting your teachers

August 15, 2012

Dear Children,
School starts in a few days so today we went to meet your teachers.  I think it's going to be a great year!!

Sonora with her 1st grade teacher, Ms. Miyagawa

Clara with her 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Jorden

Jonas with his 4th grade teacher, Ms. Jurewich

The last picture cracks me up.  Better not get too close, your new teacher might bite!

Love you all, best of luck in the new school year.

Poop Balls

Dear Clara and Nora,

Picture this:  Two sisters playing nicely.  You each have a corner of the room where you've gathered books, pillows, blankets, and drinks to make yourself a cozy little home.  At first it's pure sister bliss.  As the game continues however, Clara, being the older sister, starts to get more demanding and bossy.  I can tell Nora's getting frustrated, but I choose to let the game progress in hopes that all will be well.  The two sisters start to get into an argument.  Clara rattles off some rather mean comments and hoping to retaliate Nora clenches her fists, grits her teeth and yells, "Well, you're a... a... big, big... POOP BALL!"

The phrase caught like wildfire in our tiny two bedroom abode.  Whenever there is name calling to be done, this is by far the name of choice.  I've tried to not make a big deal of it and in so doing I fear that the children think it's an acceptable name to yell out at someone in anger or frustration.  It's only a matter of time before I'm called a big ol' poop ball.

It's gotten so bad that the other night at family prayer it was Clara's turn and she prayed, "...and please bless us so that we can stop calling each other poop balls."  It was very hard to suppress the giggles.

It's growing on Papa and he wishes it could stay around, but it's not gonna happen.  I've resorted to giving gentle (or not so much) thumps to the mouth whenever someone says it.  I had to thump Papa's mouth the other night (all in good fun) because he said it.  I'm hoping Clara's prayer is granted soon.

On Being Modest

August 30, 2011

Dear Clara and Nora,
I sometimes wonder if it's that big of a deal to be so strict with what my little girls wear (or what I wear, for that matter).  Some of the cutest outfits are sleeveless and I want to buy them so bad.  Does it really matter what you wear now as long as you learn to cover up eventually?  That's the thing.   If I let you wear whatever you want now at what age do you start dressing modestly?  I think it has to begin early so that it won't ever be an issue.

I want you to respect your body.  I want you to dress appropriately so that you're never purposefully causing boys/men to think inappropriately.  Do I want you to wear dresses to your ankles with sleeves to your wrists?  No.  I believe a woman can still be stylish, feminine and gorgeous while being modest.  I believe righteous men find women even more desirable if they are trying to live the Gospel fully.

Sometimes people just don't get my strict standards and that's okay.  They think I'm strange and they might think you're strange too.  Being strange isn't such a bad thing.  Different is good.  Embrace it. :)

strange
adj. strang·erstrang·est
1. Not previously known; unfamiliar.
2.
a. Out of the ordinary; unusual or striking.
b. Differing from the normal.
3. Not of one's own or a particular locality, environment, or kind; exotic.

The poster and the following information is taken from the Friend magazine.

When you get dressed to go to school, church, or just be with your friends, look over this checklist to make sure your appearance reflects what you believe. Ask yourself, “If I were with Jesus Christ, would I feel comfortable with my appearance?”

  •  My shoulders are covered.
  •  My shirt covers my stomach.
  •  My shorts or skirt go to my knees.
  •  My shirt is not low-cut.
  •  My clothes are not tight.
  •  I don’t look sloppy.
  •  My hair is combed.
  •  My clothes are not saggy, torn, or holey to fit in with a style.
  •  Labels or words on my clothes are respectful, not rude or offensive.
Tip: Sometimes you might think your clothes are modest—until you start moving around. To make sure you will still be modest if you bend over or run around, sing the Primary song, “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”and do the actions while you sing. If you can still be modest with all that movement, you’re ready to go!

From me:  I've recently been wondering if this applies to sports as well?  What about swimsuits (even modest ones) that reveal so much of our bodies?  I ask these questions because I myself, don't know the answers.  I mean, I think tanks and regular swimsuits are okay under certain circumstances (ie sports & swimming).  It's all so fuzzy, this area between right and wrong.  Do what you feel good about my loves.  I suggest looking to the prophets for counsel.  I know they're inspired.

Sincerely, Your momacita

P.S. As always, these are my opinions and I don't expect anyone to adopt them as their own.  I'm just sharing lessons I've learned along the way of life.

P.S.S. Update 3-27-13:  I think it's totally ok and appropriate for babies and toddlers to wear tank tops and sleeveless clothing.  It seems like the time to start dressing more modestly coincides with the time kids start spending more time around other adults and children.  Preschool age.

Splash Park Papa

July 17, 2011

Dear Children,
Your papa has made up a new game that you absolutely love.  Instead of bathing you in the bathtub he puts you in the shower and then makes up all kinds of crazy "Splash Park" related games.

Tickets are required and after he collects them the fun begins.  The top ticket is Nora's and then Clara and Jonas'.

I love it because you all beg for him to bathe you instead of me. I'm alright with that.  No, really.

Spunk and Giggles

July 16, 2011

Dear Nora,
Your personality was adorable today.  So full of spunk and giggles, my favorite kind of day.  I decided to document it with photos.

You, in turn wanted to take some photos of me because I was, “such a nice mama today.”  I'm pretty sure I was nice because you were being so pleasant.  Or was it the other way around?

Woah.  Put the camera down and back away.

Love you,
Me

On Getting Out of a Slump

Sunday, June 19th, 9:36pm

Dear Daughters,
I haven't written a letter for more than a week.  There's a reason for it.  A long, drawn out, boring reason;  but I'd like to tell you anyway.

About a month ago I was at a doctor's apointment and I mentioned a concern I had.  My doctor wanted me to do some blood work to make sure I didn't have a Pituitary Tumor.  After the blood work was done I had to wait for the results and then make another appointment to see my doctor so she could go over them in person.

The results were... okay.  At least they ruled out the initial thought of me having a tumor, but she thought I should then have an Ultrasound because my blood test was slightly abnormal.  An appointment was made and a few days later I was getting an Ultrasound.  At this point they were trying to rule out Breast Cancer.

While getting my Ultrasound it was suggested I stay and get a Mammogram as well since things still weren't quite right.  I waited for the results of both of these tests and then made another apointment to see my doctor to go over the results in person.  When she got the results everything was still just okay so she sent a referral for me to go to a different clinic and get a Ductogram.

I was now freaking out, but trying to play it cool.  I was certain I was dying and told Danika so.  She let me cry to her for about an hour and it felt good.  Trey kept assuring me I was going to be okay and that they were just taking precautions to get to the bottom of everything.

The end results were that I wasn't dying.  I didn't have a Pituitary Tumor.  I didn't have Breast Cancer.  Nope, it turns out I have hormones that are all out of whack.  Oh my goodness, as if I didn't already know that!!  I know I'm a mess, but at least I have a reason now.  Right?  Am I right?  Hello?

Over the course of the next few weeks I was in contact with a few friends who were; in some way or another, deeling with depression or out of control hormones.  We chatted about how to overcome them; should we take medication, or was it just a matter of being more faithful and trying harder?  I still don't know the answer.

My hormones don't always get in the way of life, usually just one week out of the month (you know the week).  Is that a reason to not write our life's happenings just because I felt depressed, unmotivated, mopey, tired, fed up and stressed?  I wasn't being the nicest person in the world and I'm sorry.  Oh me, oh my.  Life had me down!  Satan was winning!

Something happened to pull me out of my slump, something always does.   I was re-reading the book, "A Heart Like His" by Virginia H. Pearce and it was exactly what I needed to pull myself up, dust myself off, and start over fresh.

I was reading the book out of duty because "A Heart Like His" is our theme for girls camp so I was using it to help plan devotionals.  As I was reading though I realized how closed my heart was and that if I wanted things to change I needed to not only pray for them to change, but I needed to make a change.

The author quotes Elder John H. Groberg,
When filled with God's love, we can do and see and understand things that we could not otherwise do or see or understand.  Filled with His love, we can endure pain, quell fear, forgive freely, avoid contention, renew strength, and bless and help others in ways suprising even to us.

I wasn't feeling His love, but that was my own fault and I decided to do something about it.

1.  Wake up earlier so I have time to shower, get ready for the day, and read my scriptures before the kids wake up.  In order to do this I have to wake up at 5:30am.  NOT something I enjoy, but something that DOES help.

2.  Make sure all the blinds are opened for the day.  It may seem like a little thing, but sunlight = happiness.  Attempting to be outside in the fresh air and sunlight everyday will do wonders too.

3.  Make sure I'm eating healthy, getting enough sleep and excercising.  By excercising I don't mean going to the gym for an hour.  I'm talking about crazy busy mom excercises (I'll talk about those later).

4.  Try and get organized the day before so that things run more smoothly.  A disorganized mom = stress, chaos and blah!

As I was going about my new regiment of early morning reading I came across an article in the Ensign that quoted heavily from a talk by Elder Richard G. Sott titled, "Trust in the Lord".  He said,

Just when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously.  When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience , they are evidence that the Lord feels you are prepared to grow more.  He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding and compassion, which polish you for your everlasting benefit.  To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching, and that generally entails discomfort and pain.

The scripture D&C 84:88 was also quoted,
I will go before your face.  I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

For about a week now I've had a completely different attitude and it's amazing the difference it makes.  I share this extremely boring story with you to let you know you're not alone when you feel down and you're not crazy either. :)  I'm hoping that by reading about my trials they'll help you to better overcome your own.

I love you and wish you the best.  I'm always here for you.

Hair Tips and Tricks

June 4, 2011

Dear Daughters,
When you grow up you're going to fall in love.  You will then get married.  You will then have children.  Maybe a daughter or two.  You will then have to do their hair every. single. day.

(pic. 1)

Some days they'll cry, some days they'll throw a fit and most days they'll grumble at least a little.  I'm going to share some tips with you to help prevent the tears, fits, and most of the grumbles.

(pic. 2)

** If you turn doing hair into a game, it's instantly more fun.  "Oh hello, Welcome to my beauty shop.  I'm so glad you stopped by today."  This is a good time to find out what's going on inside that lovely daughters head of yours.  "So, tell me how you've been... I heard you have a test today.  Are you nervous?... How is that mother of yours?  Is she treating you good...etc."

(pic. 3)

** All hairstyles in our house now fall into one of two categories.  Braids or Waves.
Saturdays are usually braid days because they keep your hair back for soccer and running around.  On Sunday we then let your braids down and you have waves.  Monday is braids again followed by Tuesday waves.  You get the idea.  This way we only have to really do your hair every other day and it prevents your hair from getting too tangled and unmanageable.  On the wave days you have a bath that evening and the process starts over in the morning.

** When I braid your hair before school I get it slightly damp and then put a palm full of mousse on it to keep the braids in better and help the waves not be so frizzy.  On Wave day I take out the braids and run my fingers through to loosen them.  I then get a palm full of mousse and scrunch the waves.

(pic. 4)

** There are five basic braids I alternate.  Loops (pic. 1), Crown (pic. 2), Knot (pic. 3), School Girl (pic. 4) and Inside Out (pic. 5).  Sometimes we'll even mix it up and do School Girl Buns or Fish Tail.  We're fancy like that.  I've found that these braids are the fastest and eaisiest to do before school.

Easy Cheesy Lemon Squeezey, right?

Hope this helps.  Love you, Mama
